Waffle Wonders

Welcome to Brussels – the waffle capital of the world, where chocolate isn’t just a treat, it’s an art, and every street feels like a scene from a postcard. Whether you’re wandering through charming cobbled streets lined with breathtaking architecture or savoring the finest Belgian brews, Brussels offers the perfect blend of history, culture, and indulgence. With its mix of medieval charm and modern flair, this city will capture your heart—one delicious bite of chocolate and one refreshing sip of beer at a time.

We made a quick pit stop in Brussels, starting with a visit to the Grand Place, the city's most iconic square, renowned for its architectural splendor. Our exploration began with the famous Everard 't Serclaes monument, located on Rue de l'Étuve. The statue honors Everard 't Serclaes, a 14th-century nobleman who played a pivotal role in Brussels' liberation from the French in 1356. The statue’s uniqueness lies in a local tradition—many believe rubbing the statue’s arm brings good luck and fortune. As a result, the bronze arm has become gleaming and polished, a testament to the countless visitors hoping for a little luck with their touch.

Situated in the heart of the city, the square is surrounded by exquisite guildhalls, the grand Town Hall, and the elaborate King's House (Maison du Roi), which showcases a harmonious mix of Gothic, Baroque, and Neo-Classical styles. This lively square is a perfect fusion of history, culture, and vibrant energy, drawing both locals and tourists to admire its beauty or relax at one of the many charming cafés lining its edges.

Before diving into the city's renowned chocolate shops, we made a stop at Brussels' most iconic and playful monument—Manneken Pis. Located at the junction of Rue de l'Étuve and Rue du Chêne, this small bronze statue of a boy urinating into a fountain is a true emblem of the city's irreverent charm. The origins of Manneken Pis are steeped in mystery, with various theories surrounding its creation. Some believe it represents Brussels’ rebellious spirit, while others say it honors a young boy who allegedly saved the city from a gunpowder explosion. Regardless of its origins, Manneken Pis has become a symbol of Brussels' quirky sense of humor and its embrace of the unexpected.

...and continued to wander through the rest of Grand Place, all while indulging in some irresistible waffles!

Just a stone's throw from the iconic Grand Place, two must-see attractions await – Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert and the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula. The Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert, one of Brussels' most elegant and historic shopping arcades, is a stunning glass-roofed masterpiece from the 19th century. This architectural gem perfectly blends luxury, culture, and history, offering a selection of upscale boutiques, cafés, and artisanal chocolatiers. Whether you’re meandering past designer shops, savoring a coffee at a chic café, or indulging in some of the finest Belgian chocolates, the arcade is an absolute must-visit for those seeking to experience the city’s sophistication with a dash of charm.

The Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula is one of Brussels' most awe-inspiring landmarks, renowned for its breathtaking Gothic architecture and rich historical significance. Nestled in the city’s heart, this cathedral stands as a powerful symbol of Belgium's religious and architectural legacy. It also hosts important state ceremonies, including royal weddings and national celebrations. The serene and majestic interior offers a tranquil space for reflection, while its impressive grandeur serves as a reminder of Brussels' deep-rooted history.

As we wrapped up our Brussels adventure, it was clear that this city is far more than just waffles and chocolate (though those are definitely hard to ignore). From quirky statues to grand architecture, and hidden gems to vibrant history, Brussels is a delightful mix of the unexpected and the extraordinary. Whether you're wandering its cobbled streets, nibbling on Belgian treats, or gazing up at its grand monuments, Brussels never fails to surprise and charm.

À bientôt, Brussels!
